End

Finally, P3 has come to an end. Been too busy with production to blog during the last few days but still, even though I did not manage to finish, I was quite pleased with the fact that I still have something to show, I did the best I could with the time given (considering the fact that I was so uninspired and demotivated during the first few weeks).

Still, I was kinda disappointed by my audio. Because I was using a ear piece while adding in the audio, I thought it was too loud and turn it down until it's around -18 :C and I seriously regretted doing that.

I kinda regretted not joining the lines are well because I'll have to color the scenes manually & carefully but I still like the style I used for P3. Next time, I would like to try some other style but I guess, experimental styles is better to leave it during my own free time than FYP

During this dry run, I came to learn about my weakness and how to schedule out my time as well as which kind of style etc to go for. The main thing I came to realise is I would rather animate a moving animal than a human, and of course, I find it hard to animate middle aged man as well and I would definitely prefer drawing females to male. Haha XD

So... let's seee~ part of my FYP plans:
- Draw/sketch the scenes during weekdays
- Color scenes during weekend (since, weekend are probably the days that I tend to procrastinate more and coloring is probably my favourite part thus being able to hold my attention for the longest :P)

------

Regarding the screening, I'm impressed with Chuin's style~ I adore it to bits, reminded me of Monster Inc for some reason. O! and the end part where the flat colors gradually turn into a paint-feel illustration~ LOVE IT

I love angie's style as well~
and I definitely notice Laurie skills in animating. Though she didn't manage to finish the scenes but for those that she did, it looks smooth and nice C:

The twins did a SUPER AWESOME JOB, kudos to them. Bleh, so much for not being able to draw :P I think they did very well, their constant effort paid off and hopefully this will serve as a confident boost for them to believe more in themselves. Love germ's credits and ending.

I could see improvements in my classmates as well~ which I'm most proud of.

Rach & Kez did great~ Love how their piece is able to crack me up.

Another memorable piece would be greg's one. His way of hiding the lip sync up cracks me up and I mean it in a friendly way :P Well, he definitely did more than what I expected him to, not to mention it's in 2D!

Though, not gossiping or whatsoever. I'm just giving my honest opinion regarding the screening. I find Kevin being utterly rude to the feedbacks. Not that I have anything against him but I think he did not put in enough effort and he sounds as if he's giving excuses. Perhaps, it's just me... but bleh, I just don't like his tone towards the feedbacks.

:C

Been long since I've last updated, been busy and tired coping with two modules and being sick made it worst. I'm definitely trying my best not to let the sickness or pessimism get to me.

Ever since interim 3, I've inked 4 more scenes and working on my fifth one now. The one that requires animating fire. It's harder than I thought to animate elemental objects. Though, I roughly got it but still not quite there yet. I have to admit that I've been devoting more of my attention to character design - 3d modeling because the submission date is earlier and I'm only about to start rigging whereas Alan expects us to be able to animate our characters by the time it reached submission day. Though, in terms of progress in character design, I'm probably in the middle - not fast nor slow as compared to the rest. I'm really praying that MoI y3 could handle & pass both of the modules.

-coughs- Man, I wonder what the school's thinking when they put such heavy subjects together. We're already sleep deprived to begin with.

Hopefully I'm able to finish at least 75% of my animation.

O and a big thankyou to Jarrold for voicing for me C:

Testing

At first I wanted to use the lightning option found in aftereffects but then I realise the lightning produce but AE is a tad bit too realistic and it wouldn't go well with the style I'm going with so I did a quick test on the lightning animation :C

Still working on it but anyways~ This is the simple test I did:

Research on clouds

Regarding the movement of clouds, It seems as though it's really tricky~

The below are some reference that I find useful:

Clouds moving motion:

Girl in cloud (Animation):

(In this animation there's also scenes of how the animator show the light effects on the dark lightning clouds)

Interim 2

Interim 2
Today is my presentation for interm 2. It supposed to take place on Thursday but luckily Alan understands about the time constraints we had and allowed us to choose to present on either Thursday or Friday.

During interim 1, I realize the colour I drew my storyboard in was rather light, thus, this time round~ I drew it in black so that it’ll be easier for everyone to see. 

I went second after Honey for the presentation :’D I spent a lot of time working on the animatics and perhaps because I kept replaying and seeing it plus the fact that I know the story like the back of my hand… I became blinded to a crucial factor in the animatics – The pacing.

It was only after Interim two then I realize how slow the pacing of my animatics was. Of course, it’s always better to know it late than never know it at all so; I’ll be working on editing the pacing during the weekends.

Other than the pacing, it seems as though certain shots are held for too long and redundant. One of which is the scene with Roy walking down the forest path. Alan suggested to show the walking for a while and then cutting to a tighter shot to show him whistling and looking around – enjoying nature. This will help emphasize his change of mood when grey clouds start gathering in the area.

Instead of making Roy’s eyebrow fall off as an impact from being strike by lightning, Alan suggested that it’ll be nicer if the shot is changed to a close up where we see the lightning striking his eyebrow and then causing the eyebrow to be burnt off (with whisps of smoke trailing behind). I really like this suggestion and I’ll be editing this part to what Alan has suggested.

Yi Chuin suggested that I should have a shot showing Zeus reaction regarding his miss at shooting Roy with a Lightning bolt as that’ll make the story clearer.

O! And the language :P I was told that some of my dialogs are rather awkward for the characters so I’ll be editing that part too~

After the interim, I consulted Alan regarding my animatics so that he would go on in dept in picking out the faults in my animatics. Truthfully, I was amazed by how he could think like the character and his suggestions are really, very, helpful. I guess I still have a lot to learn before being able to tell a good story.

The below are some other pointers that he mentioned:
-When the screen fades to black, you could lead in with audio to hint the audience as to what come next
-Before Roy gloated about not being hit by the first lightning strike, show that the first lightning actually hit a tree beside Roy down to further enhance the mood when he gloats about it
-I could scrap off the first part and replace if with a long shot of a walk cycle down the forest path where he gets hit and his toenail flies off
-Edit the title of the story :P (I’ll work on this one too)
-Instead of being angry at his bad luck, show him being depressed about it because it’s useless to be angry at something that can’t be controlled by humans (e.g. Forces of nature or the gods up above in this case)
-Roy’s ranger partner disbelief in Roy’s luck before a lightning struck inbetween Roy’s leg and “light up” the house by “bouncing off” in the house
-Switched Zeus to be one going for a shot next (at the last panel) – Dart like

*Research about moving clouds for it can get rather tricky

That’s about it for today :P Gained lots of valuable suggestions that will further improve the story.

Gant chart

Today's our first ever group consultation for project 3 and at first I was expecting some sort of a progress review and getting feedbacks from everyone but instead, we were told about the importance of a gant chart.

A gant chart keeps track of your progress and it also allows you to know how much time you're left with etc. But of course, you'll have to follow your gant chart inorder for it to work/accurate about your progress if not, it'll be useless.

It'll be like creating a milestone for our target and perhaps charting a break inbetween as a reward everytime we manage to finish something hard.

Alan stresses the importance of storyboards, without one it will be almost impossible to chart out the gant chart as well as starting on the animatics.

Also, Alan mention that it's best that we work on the ending scenes first as they're the scenes that leave the deepest impression in the audience as it's the last scene the audience will see. Usually they're also the hardest scene, thus, clearing them first would make production easier.

Ah! Alan mentioned about working smart too :P like the scene in Wallace & Grommit, sometimes the animator would show that the characters could speak (lipsync) at the start and then in the middle they'll try to cover the characters mouth to lessen down on lipsyncing (saving time). Because previously, they're already shown that the characters could speak, the audience would naturally assumed that the characters are speaking despite the fact that their mouths are being covered by an object.

presentation 1

Wednesday - Presentation1

In today's presentation, I realized that my storyboards' colour is rather light so the next time round I'll try to use darker colors/black instead.

I've gained valuable feedback, especially the one Alan suggested (a scene to show the look of zeus/thor trying to aim lightning at roy)

My storyboard's rather repeative and it's best if I increase the pace at the back because it's kinda draggy. To add on, the narration is a tad bit long winded so it'll be best if it's shorten down.

Also! Alan mention that it'll be best if there are some distinct items on each characters such as... perhaps a viking helm for Thor, it'll be easier to tell the gods apart.
